Oftentimes people want to make a bold fashion statement, or wear a clothing article that is unique and cute. However, in this extravaganza of fashion statements, bold articles, and trending clothing, people can often times forget about what exactly it is their outfits are portraying. In recent years, in the media, there have been a plethora of instances in which runway articles of clothing and accessories and artists have wrongly appropriated elements of cultures. Moreover, through recent rhetoric expressed by key political figures a sense of fear runs throughout people with different cultures that fall outside of the mainstream culture.

Writing 39A, Introduction to Writing and Rhetoric, is a placement-only course designed to give college writers the skills they need to succeed as academic writers. It is a portfolio-based course, building skills by taking new writers through the components of analytical thinking and writing, piece by piece. Each 39A instructor chooses a central text or genre and designs a series of essays and supporting assignments in order to teach students to link their critical reading skills more closely to their writing. Students learn to break down the elements of good writing in the class texts, and then to imitate these elements in their own voice.

What I have learned for the past five weeks in Writing 39B ranges from learning what the rhetoric is to applying it actual argumentative writing. Through Writing 39B, I had been introduced to the writing style of rhetoric in which a writer express their statements through persuasive language. Aspects of rhetoric that I learned were also concepts like Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are modes of persuasion that appeals to the audience in certain aspects.
She utilizes an impartial and sincere story-like tone by contrasting the perspectives of those enslaved and those who are free and by avoiding diction that would contribute to a dry text in order to appeal to those who were blind to the sufferings underwent by slaves in the South during the period of enslavement. Jacobs opens her narrative with a preface, in which she addresses her intentions of writing by clarifying that her accounts contain no fabrication. In hopes of appealing to these women, Jacobs conveys a respectful tone with the objective of creating an eye-opening tale.
