Sustainable design drove the construction of the Sierra Nevada Brewery complex. The owners were so impressed with the benefits that they used it for most of the rest of the buildings in the complex as well. The overall project contains eight structures, six of which feature a total precast solution, plus two precast bridges on the complex's approach roadway. Despite record rainfall and a harsh winter, the project was completed ahead of schedule, saving both time and money. Precast concrete also helped achieve the desired status of LEED Platinum Certification aiding in several areas, including optimized energy performance, construction-waste management, use of recycled materials, and use of regional materials. Prestressed concrete is a system into which internal stresses are intentionally induced without any form of external loads to improve its performance. The internal stresses induced in the concrete structure is used to counteract the stresses originating from the external load application. Concept, methods, advantages, and disadvantages in the prestressed concrete system are briefly described. As mentioned earlier, prestressing is the application of an initial force on the concrete structure, so that the structure is capable to counteract or withstand the stresses coming due to the service loads. The idea can be clearly understood by the example of a barrel.
